Google patent granted for editorial opinions in search results

On 22 August, Google was granted US patent 7,096,214 (filed in December 2000) for a “system and method for supporting editorial opinion in the ranking of search results”.

The search patent includes:

  • A method of determining whether a search query corresponds to (group of) query themes via a query rule associated with each query term.
  • Determining whether retrieved objects (i.e. web pages) relate to a list of favored or non-favored sources by adding an editorial opinion parameter and thus moving the object up or down in the search results.

The full google patent text can be found at the US Patent Office web site. Bill Slawski at SEO by the Sea elaborates on this search patent.
